The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken a decisive step in its ongoing disagreement with the Congress party regarding the Delhi ordinance, as it convenes a crucial meeting of its highest decision-making body, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), today at 4 pm. The meeting assumes significant importance ahead of the upcoming Opposition gathering scheduled for July 17-18 in Bengaluru.
Sources close to the matter have informed India Today that the AAP leadership is dissatisfied with the Congress party's stance on the Delhi ordinance, which aimed to limit the power of the government over bureaucrats. Despite the Congress stating that it will oppose any encroachment on the responsibilities of democratically elected state governments without directly referencing the Delhi ordinance issue, it has refrained from publicly supporting the AAP on this matter. However, it is speculated that the Congress might offer its support to the AAP in Parliament regarding the Delhi ordinance.
In light of these developments, insiders have revealed that the Aam Aadmi Party might consider boycotting the Opposition meeting if the Congress fails to extend its support on the ordinance issue. The PAC, entrusted with the responsibility of making significant decisions for the AAP, will make the final determination on this matter during today's meeting.
The forthcoming Opposition gathering has garnered attention as it aims to unite leaders from 24 like-minded political parties, with the previous edition attracting participation from 15 parties. During the initial meeting held in Patna last month, these Opposition parties pledged to join forces to combat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) collectively in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
However, divisions within the Opposition have recently emerged, primarily with the AAP expressing reservations about participating in future gatherings unless the Congress publicly supports them on the Delhi ordinance issue. The AAP has explicitly requested the Congress to clarify its position on the Centre's ordinance, which would enable the AAP's attendance at the Bengaluru meeting and other subsequent conclaves.
The outcome of today's PAC meeting holds the key to the AAP's participation in the Opposition meeting in Bengaluru. The political landscape awaits the decision with bated breath, as the growing tension between the AAP and Congress threatens the unity sought by the Opposition parties against the ruling BJP in the upcoming general elections.
It remains to be seen whether the AAP's concerns will be addressed, leading to a unified front against the BJP, or if this rift will deepen, potentially reshaping the dynamics of Indian politics in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
