All-Party Meeting Convenes in Delhi to Address Escalating Violence in Manipur

| 24 June 2023

Delhi - An all-party meeting is currently underway in the nation's capital to address the escalating violence in Manipur, a northeastern state in India. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for the meeting, which aims to discuss the prevailing situation and find a resolution to the ongoing unrest.

The meeting has brought together a diverse range of political leaders, representing various parties from across the country. Prominent attendees include Nityanand Rai, Pralhad Joshi, and JP Nadda from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), O Ibobi Singh from the Indian National Congress, Priyanka Chaturvedi from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Derek O'Brien from the Trinamool Congress, C Lalrosanga from the Mizo National Front, Pinaki Mishra from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), M Thambidurai from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Tiruchi Siva from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Manoj Jha from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Ram Gopal Yadav from the Samajwadi Party, Sanjay Singh from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), along with leaders of other political parties.

The violence in Manipur, which has left a trail of devastation in its wake, has claimed the lives of nearly 120 individuals and left over 3,000 injured. The unrest began on May 3 when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts, initiated by the Meitei community, to protest the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

In response to the crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur for a four-day visit last month, during which he engaged with the local populace to restore peace and normalcy in the state. However, despite the efforts made, the violence has continued unabated for almost 50 days.

The Centre's handling of the situation in Manipur has faced severe criticism from opposition parties, who argue that sufficient measures have not been taken to quell the unrest and protect the lives and livelihoods of the affected population. The meeting in Delhi serves as an opportunity for these political leaders to express their concerns, provide valuable insights, and collectively work towards finding a lasting solution to the crisis.

The all-party meeting signifies a united front, transcending political affiliations, in addressing the grave situation in Manipur. It is expected that the participants will engage in candid discussions, exchange perspectives, and explore strategies to restore peace and harmony in the violence-hit region.

As the meeting progresses, all eyes are on the outcome, hoping that it will pave the way for immediate actions to bring an end to the violence in Manipur. The people of Manipur, exhausted and traumatized by the prolonged unrest, eagerly await a resolution that can ensure their safety and well-being.

The nation watches as these leaders join forces to tackle the crisis and alleviate the suffering of the people of Manipur.
