The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning as the cyclonic storm named 'Biparjoy' has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm, posing a significant threat to the coastal regions of Kerala. The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in Kerala for the next five days, urging authorities to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of residents.
With the impending weather conditions, a yellow alert has been issued for several districts in Kerala. Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode have been placed on high alert for June 11 (Sunday), while Kannur and Kozhikode will be on yellow alert on June 12.
The cyclonic storm brings with it the potential for strong winds, with speeds expected to reach 55 kmph. In response, fishing activities have been prohibited along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu until June 15, to safeguard the lives of fishermen and prevent any untoward incidents at sea.
According to the IMD's early morning release on Sunday, wind speeds are projected to range between 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph along and off the Saurashtra coast. The situation is expected to worsen on Monday, with wind speeds increasing to 45-55 kmph and gusting up to 65 kmph. The IMD further warns that wind speeds may escalate to 50-60 kmph, accompanied by gusts of up to 70 kmph.
In light of these developments, the IMD has issued a statement directing fishermen currently at sea to return to the coast immediately and advising authorities to regulate onshore and offshore activities cautiously. The safety of residents and the prevention of any potential damage caused by the cyclonic storm are of paramount importance.
The IMD's statement emphasized the need for state governments to closely monitor the situation in their respective areas and take appropriate precautionary measures. District authorities have been urged to remain vigilant and implement necessary safety protocols promptly.
As the cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' gains strength and approaches the coastal regions of Kerala, it is crucial for residents and authorities alike to heed the warnings and stay prepared. Precautionary actions, such as securing loose objects, reinforcing structures, and staying updated with official announcements, will contribute to minimizing the potential impact of the storm.
The IMD will continue to closely monitor the cyclonic storm's progress and provide timely updates to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected regions. It is imperative for residents to stay informed, follow official instructions, and cooperate with local authorities throughout this period of heightened weather activity.
By remaining vigilant and taking necessary precautions, Kerala can navigate this severe weather event with resilience, ensuring the protection of lives and properties
