Imphal, Manipur: The already volatile state of Manipur was once again marred by fresh violence as women protestors took to the streets in the Ghari area of Imphal. The protest resulted in the burning of tyres, prompting law enforcement agencies to respond with force. The Manipur armed police, Army, and rapid action battalion quickly rushed to the spot to quell the unrest and restore order. A flag march was subsequently conducted in various areas to control the protestors.
This incident comes in the wake of sustained ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities that have gripped Manipur since May 3. The violence, which has claimed the lives of over 160 people so far, erupted when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized by the hill districts' residents to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
With Meiteis accounting for approximately 53 percent of Manipur's population and residing predominantly in the Imphal Valley, and tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constituting 40 percent and mainly inhabiting the hill districts, the divide has created a tumultuous situation in the state.
In addition to several incidents of arson, loot, and violence reported across the state, a disturbing video emerged, dating back to May 4. The video depicted two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a group of men from the other side, sparking nationwide outrage. In response to this appalling incident, five individuals have been arrested.
Amidst the escalating crisis, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised questions about the timing of the video's release, claiming that politics may be behind the leak. He further asserted that incidents of rape are relatively low in the Northeast, particularly in Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on the Manipur situation during his recent remarks, expressing shame for the actions of those responsible and vowing to ensure that the perpetrators face stringent punishment. The Prime Minister's statement came after over 1800 hours of silence on the matter, drawing criticism from the opposition.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh condemned the Prime Minister's delayed response, highlighting the gravity of the ongoing violence and demanding swifter action.
Manipur continues to grapple with the deep-rooted ethnic tensions, leading to recurring outbreaks of violence. The need for urgent and sustainable solutions cannot be overstated, as innocent lives continue to be lost, and communities remain torn apart. It is crucial for the state government and the central authorities to work in unison to address the underlying issues and prevent further bloodshed.
As the situation remains tense and the death toll climbs, the onus lies on the policymakers and leaders to take decisive steps and ensure lasting peace in Manipur.
