G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration Calls for Peace in Ukraine and Affirms International Principles

| 09 September 2023

In a significant development at the G20 summit held in New Delhi, world leaders came together to issue a resounding call for the establishment of a "comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine." The G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, released after intense discussions among member states, reaffirmed the commitment to upholding fundamental principles of international law and peacekeeping.

The declaration, which reflects a consensus among G20 nations, carries a strong message against the use of force to seek territorial acquisition and any actions that might undermine the territorial integrity of any nation. It also emphasized the inadmissibility of the use or threat of using nuclear weapons in today's global context.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation in Ukraine, the declaration recalled previous discussions held in Bali and stressed the importance of adhering to national positions and resolutions adopted at the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly. Specifically, it referenced A/RES/ES-11/1 and A/RES/ES-11/6, emphasizing that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety.

"In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible," the declaration underscored.

The G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration is a testament to the commitment of the world's major economies to promote peace, stability, and adherence to international norms. It reflects the collective will of the G20 nations to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and prevent further escalation.

Ukraine, which has been a focal point of international concern due to the conflict in its eastern regions, can find solace in the support and recognition of its sovereignty and territorial integrity expressed by the G20 member states. The call for peace and the rejection of the use of force for territorial gains represent a united front against aggression and an affirmation of the principles that underpin the United Nations.

The declaration is also a reminder that the G20, as a platform for global economic cooperation, recognizes its broader responsibility in addressing pressing international security issues. It serves as a platform for leaders to discuss not only economic challenges but also matters of global importance, such as peace and security.

In conclusion, the G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration has sent a clear and unequivocal message to the world: a commitment to a peaceful resolution of conflicts, respect for territorial integrity, and the rejection of nuclear weapons as a means of coercion. It is a step towards a more stable and secure world, built upon the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, and it reaffirms the G20's role in shaping global governance beyond economic matters. The eyes of the world now turn to the practical implementation of these principles and the hope for a brighter future for Ukraine and international peace.
