In a significant diplomatic development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday amidst the continuing Israel-Hamas conflict, affirming India's unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms. The leaders discussed the situation during a phone call, with PM Modi pledging unwavering support for Israel in these trying times.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to make the announcement, Prime Minister Modi stated, "Just had a phone call with PM @netanyahu, who provided me with an update on the ongoing situation. People of India stand firmly with Israel in this difficult hour. India strongly and unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations."
The Israeli-Hamas conflict, which erupted on October 7, has exacted a heavy toll, claiming over 1,600 lives on both sides. Israel has reported at least 900 casualties, with over 2,600 individuals wounded. In stark contrast, Gaza has faced even grimmer statistics, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting 704 fatalities, including 143 children and 105 women, along with more than 4,000 injured as a result of Israeli airstrikes.
India's unequivocal condemnation of terrorism resonates with Israel's stance in this conflict. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep shock at the "terrorist attacks" in Israel and reiterated India's unwavering solidarity with the nation.
The conflict, sparked by an unprecedented and surprise attack by Hamas on Israel, has escalated into a protracted battle. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that Israel had not initiated the war but had been forced into it. In his statement, he remarked, "We didn't want this war. It was forced upon us in the most brutal and savage way," adding, "We didn't start this war, but we will finish it."
This show of support from Prime Minister Modi and the Indian government further underscores the global ramifications of the Israel-Hamas conflict. As the world watches, diplomatic efforts continue to seek a path to peace and stability in the region, as the toll on both sides of the conflict continues to rise.
