Opposition and Centre Lock Horns Over Manipur - A Tale of Accusations and Demands

| 27 July 2023

In a fiery exchange during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Smriti Irani accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of setting "Manipur on fire." Responding to these allegations, Gandhi, in a video shared on social media, retorted by questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's actions for the state and blaming the ruling BJP and RSS for Manipur's woes.

Gandhi's video message addressed Modi's silence on the Manipur issue, stating that it is indicative of the Prime Minister's indifference towards the state's problems. He alleged that the BJP-RSS's ideology was responsible for the turmoil and unrest that engulfed Manipur. Accusing the ruling party of prioritizing power over the welfare of the country, Gandhi passionately expressed his concerns for the suffering of the Manipuri people.

The Parliament has been witnessing heated exchanges between the Opposition and the Centre ever since the Monsoon session began on July 20. The key point of contention has been the demand from the Opposition for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the situation in Manipur.

The BJP-led government, on the other hand, has accused the Opposition of creating a hostile environment that hinders constructive discussions on the matter. This has resulted in both sides issuing multiple adjournment notices to push forward their respective demands.

The situation in Manipur escalated after a disturbing video emerged showing two tribal women being paraded naked in the state. This incident garnered widespread attention and condemnation, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to finally address the situation. His remarks marked the first time he spoke about Manipur since May, drawing further scrutiny from the Opposition.

The violence that unfolded in Manipur in May left a trail of destruction, with over 160 fatalities and hundreds more injured. The ethnic clashes were triggered when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Amidst the blame game between political parties, the suffering of the people of Manipur continues to be a cause for concern. The need of the hour is for both the Centre and the Opposition to put aside their differences and work towards finding a sustainable solution to address the root causes of the turmoil in the state.

While political bickering may be unavoidable, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of the people affected by violence and unrest. Constructive dialogue, empathy, and a genuine commitment to finding solutions are essential to restoring peace and stability in Manipur.

As the Parliament session progresses, it is hoped that both sides can rise above their differences and focus on the larger goal of providing justice and relief to the people of Manipur. Only then can we ensure that the state is no longer a pawn in the political crossfire, but a place where peace and prosperity can prevail.
