Rahul Gandhi Accuses Government of Hiding Reality from Guests Amidst Preparations for G20 Summit

| 09 September 2023

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized the government for concealing what he believes to be the true state of the nation from international guests ahead of the G20 Summit. In a tweet posted on his official social media handle, Rahul Gandhi expressed his concern, stating, "GOI is hiding our poor people and animals."

He went on to assert, "There is no need to hide India's reality from our guests."

Rahul Gandhi's remarks come in the wake of a recent initiative by the Delhi Police, who sought the assistance of civic agencies in addressing issues related to monkeys and dogs in and around central Delhi's Rajghat. This action was taken as part of preparations for the visit of G20 delegates to the Mahatma Gandhi memorial site. According to reports, the police cleared numerous slums and requested the agencies to engage snake catchers to mitigate potential risks.

Additionally, the responsible agency was directed to mobilize personnel to capture monkeys and dogs during the delegates' visit to Rajghat. Increased patrolling activities were also reported in the Yamuna Khadar area, as per news agency PTI.

Although the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) did not explicitly link the removal of stray dogs to the G20 Summit, reports suggested that these actions were being taken "only on an urgent need basis."

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi is currently embarked on a nearly week-long tour of Europe, during which he is scheduled to engage in meetings with European Union (EU) lawmakers, students, and the Indian Diaspora.

In a parallel development, the Congress party has found itself in a contentious situation with the government regarding the non-inclusion of Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, in the G20 gala dinner invitation list. This issue has generated significant discussion, with senior Congress leader P Chidambaram remarking, "This can happen only in countries where there is no democracy or no opposition." He expressed concern that India, or Bharat, might be heading towards a state where democracy and the role of the opposition could be under threat.

Rahul Gandhi also weighed in on this matter on Friday, alleging that the government fails to recognize the leader of a significant portion of India's population, insinuating a lack of inclusivity in the political landscape.

As the G20 Summit approaches, these developments underscore the ongoing political tensions and concerns surrounding the event, which is expected to bring together world leaders to discuss critical global issues.
