Russia unleashed a series of “massive” air raids on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Monday, in what appeared to be a renewed effort to take control of the city.
The attacks, which came just days after Russia withdrew its troops from the Kyiv region, hit several residential areas in the city, killing and injuring dozens of people.
The Ukrainian government said that the attacks were part of a “barbaric” attempt to terrorize the city’s population.
“Russia is once again showing its true face,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “This is the face of a terrorist state that is trying to destroy everything that is dear to us.”
The attacks on Kyiv came as Russian forces continued to bombard other parts of Ukraine, including the eastern Donbas region.
The Donbas region has been the focus of Russia’s offensive in recent weeks, and Ukrainian officials say that Russian forces are making gains in the region.
“The situation in Donbas is very difficult,” said Zelenskyy. “The enemy is trying to break through our defenses, but we are holding on.”
The United States and its allies have condemned the attacks on Kyiv and called on Russia to stop its aggression.
“These attacks are a clear violation of international law,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “We will continue to hold Russia accountable for its actions.”
The attacks on Kyiv are a reminder that the war in Ukraine is far from over. The United States and its allies must continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
