Tensions Persist in Violence-Hit Manipur as Army Appeals for Support in Peace Restoration Efforts

| 27 June 2023

The northeastern state of Manipur continues to grapple with the aftermath of ethnic clashes that have plagued the region for over a month. In an effort to restore peace, the Army's Spears Corps has called on the public to assist its operations. However, the situation remains tense as groups of protesters, predominantly led by women, disrupt operations and deliberately block routes, hindering the timely response of security forces.

The Army, in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 27, expressed concern over the unwarranted interference by protesters, emphasizing its impact on critical situations that require immediate action to safeguard lives and property. This statement followed a recent stand-off between the Army and women protesters in Itham village, located in Imphal East. The confrontation forced the Army to release 12 militants who had been apprehended during a previous operation.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a meeting to assess the Manipur violence on Tuesday. Prior to the meeting, Union Home Minister Amit Shah briefed the prime minister on the prevailing conditions and internal security challenges in the violence-affected state.

In response to the disruption caused by the ongoing unrest, a "no work, no pay" policy will be implemented for Manipur government employees who fail to report to work due to the prevailing circumstances, as reported by PTI. A circular released on Monday by the General Administration Department, Manipur Secretariat, stated that employees not attending their official duties without authorized leave will face the salary deduction.

Moreover, an internet ban imposed in Manipur will remain in effect until 3 pm on June 30, according to an official release on Sunday. The ban aims to prevent any disturbances to peace and public order within the state.

The root cause of the ongoing clashes lies in the proposed grant of "Scheduled Tribe" status to the Meitei community. The clashes primarily involve the Meitei and Kuki communities, triggering heightened tensions between the two.

Manipur, known for its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has unfortunately become a hotbed of violence and unrest. The appeal made by the Army's Spears Corps for public support underscores the magnitude of the situation and the need for collective efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.

As the government and security forces strive to address the challenges posed by the ongoing violence, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work towards reconciliation and dialogue. Only through a concerted and inclusive approach can Manipur hope to overcome the current crisis and rebuild a future marked by harmony and progress.
