In a heart-wrenching natural disaster, at least 13 people have lost their lives, and more than 100 others are feared trapped after a massive landslide struck the Irshalwadi village in Khalapur tehsil, Raigad district, early Thursday morning. The incident has devastated around 46 households, with over 20 houses submerged in mud, causing widespread destruction and distress in the region.
The incident has prompted Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to announce an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased, providing some financial support amid the grief and tragedy. Additionally, the Maharashtra government has pledged to cover the medical expenses for the injured victims, emphasizing its commitment to aiding those affected by the calamity.
The landslide occurred when most villagers were asleep, leaving them with little time to react and save themselves. Disturbingly, some children had ventured outside the village in search of a better mobile network to play games. They were the first to witness the landslide and managed to alert a few villagers before the catastrophe unfolded.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has promptly deployed two teams to the site, initiating search and rescue operations. These expert trekkers are scaling the treacherous terrain to reach the top of the mountain, where the landslide originated, in an effort to locate and save those who may be trapped.
Reacting to the tragic incident, UBT Sena MLA Aditya Thackeray expressed deep sorrow and concern for the affected community. While acknowledging the challenges faced in communicating with villagers in the remote area, he emphasized the primary focus on the ongoing rescue operations and saving lives rather than engaging in politics at this moment.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, in his statement, assured that the state government is closely monitoring the situation and rescue efforts. He revealed that 75 people have been successfully evacuated so far, but the situation remains precarious. The relief effort initially faced hindrance due to heavy rains and darkness, but it is gradually gaining momentum.
As the rescue operations continue, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar have personally visited the site to oversee and assess the efforts of the rescue teams. Their presence highlights the gravity of the situation and the government's commitment to providing timely assistance to those affected.
Several ministers, including Uday Samant and Dada Bhuse, have also reached the affected area to take stock of the situation and extend their condolences to the victims and their families.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural disasters and the importance of emergency preparedness and response. The authorities and rescue teams are working tirelessly to save lives and provide support to the affected families. The coming hours and days will be crucial as they continue their efforts to locate and rescue those who are still trapped.
In the face of this immense tragedy, the nation stands united in grief and solidarity with the affected community, offering prayers and support during these difficult times.
