Wrestler Sakshi Malik Alleges Threats Forced Minor Wrestler to Change Statement in Harassment Case

| 17 June 2023

In a recent video statement, renowned Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik made shocking claims regarding the sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan. Malik asserted that the minor wrestler, who had initially accused Bhushan of sexual harassment, altered her statement due to threats issued to her family. These revelations come after the Delhi Police recommended the cancellation of the complaint, citing a lack of corroborative evidence.

The allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan, involving seven wrestlers, including a minor, have sent shockwaves throughout the Indian wrestling community. Prominent wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik, have demanded the immediate arrest of Bhushan, highlighting the urgent need for justice in such cases. The wrestlers had staged protests but suspended their demonstrations after receiving assurances from the government. Malik acknowledged the challenges they faced during their protests, expressing gratitude for the support received from fellow wrestlers.

Sakshi Malik emphasized the importance of unity among the wrestlers and the significance of raising their voices against injustice. "The reason we were silent for so many days was because we lacked unity. We could never get united," Malik said, shedding light on the difficulties faced by athletes in coming together to address grievances. Her statement highlights the pervasive issue of athletes being silenced and the struggle for collective action.

In a video statement supporting Malik's claims, her husband and wrestler, Satyawart Kadian, clarified that the protest was not against the government but against the alleged "misdeeds of the WFI president." Kadian revealed that the wrestlers' protest was initially authorized by two BJP leaders, Tirath Rana and Babita Phogat, dispelling any accusations that the demonstration was politically motivated. He further disclosed that female wrestlers had endured inappropriate behavior for over a decade, adding that any attempts to raise concerns were met with career setbacks orchestrated by Brij Bhushan.

The cancellation report regarding the case against Brij Bhushan is currently under consideration by the Delhi court, with a decision expected on July 4. As for the wrestlers' protest, their future course of action will be determined after a meeting with Khap and other farmer leaders scheduled for June 18. The meeting will likely address the ongoing concerns surrounding the allegations against Brij Bhushan and the necessary steps to ensure justice for the affected wrestlers.

The allegations of sexual harassment within the Wrestling Federation of India have shed light on the long-standing issue of misconduct in sports organizations. It is imperative for authorities to thoroughly investigate these allegations, protect the well-being of the victims, and hold the responsible individuals accountable. Only by addressing these concerns head-on can the wrestling community and sports fraternity as a whole maintain the trust and respect of athletes and fans alike.
